Joule, Copilot and Bridge
Almost every SAP customer is currently asking which AI assistant is the right one. The honest answer is that these three tools were built for different jobs. Once that is clear, there is usually no need to choose between them.
Joule: the assistant from the SAP world
Joule is SAP's AI assistant. It is embedded in SAP applications and helps with tasks, navigation and analysis there. Its strength is its closeness to the SAP standard and to the processes SAP itself models.
How much Joule can do in a given company depends heavily on its SAP landscape and licenses. It is furthest along in SAP's cloud solutions. Companies still running SAP ECC or a heavily customized S/4HANA landscape should check carefully what is actually available to them.
Joule also lives inside the SAP interface. Anyone who spends the working day in Microsoft Teams and Outlook has to switch environments before they can ask.
Microsoft 365 Copilot: the assistant for office work
Copilot knows your email, documents, meetings and chats. It summarizes, drafts text and finds information across the Microsoft world. That makes it highly valuable for knowledge work.
Copilot does not know business data from SAP on its own. That data can be connected, but then the question from Guide 2 returns. Which data may it see, and how should it interpret it?
Bridge: connecting the two worlds
Xient Bridge addresses exactly that gap. Questions are asked where people work, in Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Answers come live from SAP ECC or S/4HANA, under the permissions of the person asking.
Bridge replaces neither Joule nor Copilot. It makes sure SAP knowledge arrives reliably in the Microsoft world, including where Joule is not available or where people simply do not work in SAP.
| Joule | Microsoft 365 Copilot | Xient Bridge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it works | SAP applications | Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot |
| Knows out of the box | Standard SAP processes | Email, documents, chats | Approved SAP capabilities |
| Strongest setting | SAP cloud solutions | Office and knowledge work | SAP ECC and S/4HANA in daily operations |
| Meaning of the data | SAP standard | Has to be connected | Defined in business terms |
How the three work together
In many companies, all three will coexist. People working inside SAP use Joule. People handling text and meetings use Copilot. And anyone who needs a reliable answer from SAP in the middle of that daily work gets it through Bridge, without switching environments.
The next guide describes what makes that kind of access responsible.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bridge an alternative to Joule?
It is better described as a complement. Bridge brings SAP knowledge into the Microsoft world, including landscapes where Joule is unavailable or limited.
Do I need Copilot to use Bridge?
No. Bridge works in Microsoft Teams and can also be used through Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Does Bridge work with SAP ECC?
Yes. Bridge works with SAP ECC and S/4HANA.
